Veteran American diplomat Richard Holbrooke has died at the age of 69, after undergoing emergency heart surgery. Nicknamed 'The Bulldozer' he's best known for pushing the US agenda in the Balkans during the Bosnian war. More recently, he became Barack Obama's special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan. But RT's military contributor Colonel Yevgeny Khrushchev says American foreign policy in Afghanistan, especially in the fight against drugs, was itself in ill-health.

Veteran US diplomat Richard Holbrooke has died following a second round of surgery to treat a heart condition. Holbrooke's forceful style earned him nicknames such as “The Bulldozer” or “Raging Bull.” He was admitted to George Washington University Hospital on Friday after he became ill. He had surgery on Saturday to repair a torn aorta. He was President Barack Obama's special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports.

Eagles & Vultures tells the parallel narratives of Samuel Johnson's “The Vulture,” published in 1756 and the life story of Mohamed Sahnoun: born in colonial Algeria; imprisoned and tortured by the French during the Algerian struggle for independence; Ambassador on three continents; UN Special Envoy to Somalia, Sudan, Congo, Ethiopia and Eritrea; and presently, considered one of the foremost experts on conflict resolution. Threaded with a retelling of Johnson's short story, published almost three hundred years ago, Sahnoun offers us advice on where we have been and the one means to get to where we need to be, in world where peace is a option.
