Ugandan officials have blamed Somalia's Al-Shabab fighters for twin bomb attacks that ripped through the capital Kampala on Sunday. At least 64 people were killed in the attacks, apparently aimed at foreigners. They had gathered to watch the finals of the football World Cup. In an interview, Ayo Johnson, an analyst for Africa Inform, the African news agency, told Al Jazeera that the attacks have “all the hallmarks” of al-Shabab's implication. [July 12, 2010]

Al-Shabab ‘hallmarks’ in Uganda blasts

Eagles & Vultures tells the parallel narratives of Samuel Johnson's “The Vulture,” published in 1756 and the life story of Mohamed Sahnoun: born in colonial Algeria; imprisoned and tortured by the French during the Algerian struggle for independence; Ambassador on three continents; UN Special Envoy to Somalia, Sudan, Congo, Ethiopia and Eritrea; and presently, considered one of the foremost experts on conflict resolution. Threaded with a retelling of Johnson's short story, published almost three hundred years ago, Sahnoun offers us advice on where we have been and the one means to get to where we need to be, in world where peace is a option.
